Zeal for GOD’s WORD

*Bible Readings: Romans 10:9-18; Psalm 19:8-11; Matthew 4:18-22

I was caught by surprise. Hindi ko matukoy exactly kung ano ang naging trigger. Kumakain ako ng hapunan kanina (baka dahil mag-isa ako?) nang bigla na lang akong naging emotional. A deep sadness flooded my heart. All of a sudden, sad and painful memories surfaced. Naalala ko bigla yung mga problema sa pamilya at kung paanong pakiramdam ko sobrang mag-isa ako. Alam mo ba yung lungkot ng pag-iisa?

The feeling that there’s a very deep emptiness inside of you that burns your whole soul?

Parang may isang malalim na sugat na gusto mong takpan ng malaking band-aid o bendahan ng matindi upang tumigil sa pagdurugo… pero patuloy na bumubukal ang sakit at hapdi. I didn’t know what to do. I wanted to call my wife but I can’t, she’s at work. There’s no one else I could just call. Ang hirap pala kapag ikaw ang laging nakikinig sa mga tao pero walang ibang nakikinig sa’yo, yung naiintindihan mo yung mga tao dahil sila lagi ang nagsasalita pero hindi ka nila naiintindihan dahil wala ka namang chance na magsalita.

I realized hindi pala totally wala. I have my wife. She’s the only one who listens and understands me. I thank God for her. Oops! Oo nga pala, I always have God with me. Bakit nga ba hindi natin agad naiisip na kasama natin si Lord? After 14 years of being a Christian, kahit pa mas naging prayerful at sensitive ako sa presence ni Lord in the past years, ang dali ko pa din matukso na isipin na nag-iisa ako.

We are never alone. God is always with us, waiting for us to speak to Him. And when we think we don’t hear God, it’s because our Bible is closed. God’s presence is never more real than in His Word!

In the Reading from the Gospel of Matthew* we look again at that time when Jesus called His first disciples. We read that the first apostles’ reaction was to leave “everything” at once and followed Jesus. Bakit ang bilis nilang nagrespond? I believe the merit and credit does not go to the men who were called but to the Son of Man who called them. Jesus is the Word of God — God’s Living Word, incarnate! — and to hear the Word of God speak to you that close… that intimate… hindi nakakagulat kung bakit ang bilis nagrespond ng mga unang apostol!

The beauty of Jesus presence still remains with us through the Bible. The Word of God is more than the texts in the Bible but the Bible is the gateway to His Words. Kapag binasa mo ang Bible with the Holy Spirit in you, hindi mo lang basta maiintindihan ang binabasa mo, mauunawaan mo din yung kagandahang taglay ng Kanyang Salita as described by today’s passages from Psalm*. And when you experience something this good and beautiful, napakaselfish kung hindi mo ishe-share sa iba ang Salita ng Diyos.

Sa mga ganitong panahon na nalulungkot ako, o kapag may mga temptations ako… kapag nagigising ako sa gitna ng gabi o sa madaling-araw, turning to God through the Bible is my comfort. Kapag gustong-gusto ko ng makakapitan, and I am praying hard for God to manifest His presence and embrace me, He reminds me to open the Bible and read His Words of assurance and comfort. Lahat ng ito ang nagpapaalala sa akin ng dahilan kung bakit iniaalay ko ang panahon, lakas, at buhay ko sa pagtuturo sa iba ng Salita ng Diyos.

I want to help people. Pero I know that only God can truly help them. And the only way they can get to know God is to know Jesus through His Words, by pointing these people to the Bible and helping them understand the Scriptures.

If so, will you share God’s love and presence to others too by sharing His Word?

Or maybe you need help understanding the Bible. Baka may maitutulong ako. O kaya baka may kilala kang iba na pwedeng tumulong sa’yo at pwede mong lapitan. Seek help. Pray.

My prayer is that once you receive that help, once you have encountered God like the first apostles, you will also follow Jesus and share Him to others. I pray this, in Jesus’ name!
